Emotions during the EHCP Process

Your emotions may be up and down during the EHCP Process

Going through the EHCP process can trigger various emotions in parents/carers supporting their child.

The EHCP process often entails assessments, meetings, and discussions about an individual's educational needs. This can cause anxiety about the outcome and how it will affect their education. It can be complicated and time-consuming, requiring many assessments, paperwork, and coordination between professionals and organisations. This complexity can lead to frustration, especially if there are delays or difficulties in obtaining the necessary support.

When an EHCP is granted, and your child receives the support they need, it can bring relief. Knowing that the right provisions will be implemented to meet their educational needs can ease some of the stress and uncertainty about their future. However, if the outcome of the EHCP process fails to meet expectations or provide the desired level of support, it can lead to disappointment. This may occur if the requested provisions are not included. Dissatisfaction can also arise if a needs assessment has been refused, required amendments have not been made, or the desired school is not named in the final plan.

For some individuals and families, the EHCP process can be empowering. It provides an opportunity to voice their needs, advocate for themselves, and actively participate in decision-making about their education. This sense of empowerment can be a positive aspect of the process. This is where a parent advocate can support.

It's essential to acknowledge that emotions can arise during the EHCP process and to seek support if needed. People’s feelings vary widely depending on individual experiences and circumstances, as every child’s journey is very different. EHCP 4 Kids can support you through this process.
